Love something other than yourselves...

The first real (REAL) lesson we all have to learn is that there is a world outside of ourselves. It's unfortunate that a great many adults never learn that lesson, hence a great deal of the difficulties we face in the world... Given the importance of this lesson, it makes my list of what we ought to teach our children. Love, being a choice rather than a "feeling" (that would be LUST) is a perfectly good way to frame a healthy way of relating to the world. Get your kids involved with other people. Quickly. At church. In a daycare. With a sibling (not a big believer in onlies). And immediately start expanding their world. Show them things, and relate what they see to how other people feel and think and relate to the world. And teach them it's okay to give and share and love. Even when other people don't in return... And, teach them to be excited about stuff that, well, excites them. Nothing is more engaging than meeting someone who really gets into what interests them. Don't fake it...but that will be another letter!
